OL Meaning in Japan: What Is an “Office Lady”?

Updated and checked against the MyFans help centre on 11 October 2026

Short answer

OL means “office lady”: a woman office worker, usually doing clerical work at a company. The Nihon Kokugo Daijiten records it from the 1960s, when it came into use in place of the older term BG (“business girl”). On MyFans, OL describes an office-worker theme: suits, office wear and “after work” settings. Search OL on MyFans to find these creators.

Wondering what “OL” means on a creator page? OL (オーエル) stands for “office lady”, a Japanese-made English phrase for a woman who works in an office. It’s everyday Japanese — and one of the most popular themes on Japanese creator pages. Here’s what it means and where it comes from.

What OL means

The Nihon Kokugo Daijiten defines OL as a woman clerk, mainly at a company, from the English “office lady”. It is wasei-eigo: English words put together in Japan, which an English speaker wouldn’t use.

In everyday Japanese it simply means a woman in office work, much like “office worker” in English. The male counterpart is usually サラリーマン (sararīman, “salaryman”).

Where the word comes from

The dictionary notes that OL was adopted in place of BG, short for “business girl”, an earlier Japanese-made term. Its earliest quoted use is from a 1965 book, which mentions women “called BG or OL” whose daily lives look glamorous from outside.

So by the mid-1960s both words were in use, and OL became the standard one.

OL on MyFans profiles

On creator pages, OL is a theme: office wear, suits and stockings, and the “ordinary company worker with a secret side” idea, often combined with 地味 (jimi, plain) or 裏垢 (secret account). Like other profile labels, it is how a creator presents her page, not a statement about her job.
