Cosplay ROM Meaning: What Is a ROM in Japanese Cosplay?

Updated and checked against the MyFans help centre on 11 October 2026

Short answer

In Japanese cosplay, a “ROM” is a cosplayer’s self-made photo collection. Dictionaries don’t list this sense, but the history points to the CD-ROM: Japanese Wikipedia records that from the 2000s some cosplayers and photographers made CD-ROM photo collections and distributed them as doujin (self-published) works at events like Comic Market (Comiket) or through doujin shops. Adult cosplayers now also sell sets on fan sites like MyFans.

Follow Japanese cosplayers for a while and you may spot the word “ROM” next to a photo set. It’s not a computer chip. In cosplay, a ROM is a photo collection the cosplayer makes and sells themselves. Here’s where the word comes from, how doujin events like Comiket fit in, and how adult cosplayers sell their sets today.

Where the word “ROM” comes from

Look up ROM on Kotobank and you’ll only find two meanings: read-only memory, the computer chip, and internet slang for someone who reads a forum without posting (a “read-only member”). The cosplay sense isn’t in the dictionaries yet.

The history fills the gap. Japanese Wikipedia’s cosplay article says that from the 2000s, some cosplayers and photographers began making photo collections in print and on CD-ROM, and distributing them as doujinshi or doujin software at Comic Market and similar events, or through doujinshi shops. Doujin software is defined there as self-made work by individual creators or circles on digital media such as floppy disks and CD-ROMs. That history is the most likely reason the word “ROM” is used for cosplay photo sets.

Cosplay, doujin and Comiket in brief

Cosplay (コスプレ) is short for “costume play”. The Digital Daijisen dictionary defines it as dressing up as a character from manga, anime or video games, copying their costume and hairstyle, and notes that in English “costume play” means a historical drama, while “cosplay” is now understood worldwide. The Kyodo News glossary says the hobby is thought to have spread from doujinshi sales events.

同人誌dōjinshiSelf-published work by people who share an interest

即売会sokubaikaiSales event where creators sell their own work

A dōjinshi, in the Library and Information Science Glossary’s words, is a publication that like-minded people write, edit and publish themselves as a place to share their work. The biggest place to sell it is Comic Market. The official Comiket site describes it as Japan’s largest doujinshi sales event, started in 1975 and usually held twice a year, in summer and winter, at Tokyo Big Sight. Japanese Wikipedia adds that it is run by the Comic Market Preparatory Committee, with the summer event in August and the winter one in December.

Cosplay photo sets even have their own corner there. Japanese Wikipedia notes that from Comic Market 82, cosplay photo collections, in print or digital, were given their own genre, コスプレ, split off from the “デジタル(その他)” (digital, other) category.

How cosplayers sell photo sets today

The internet changed everything. Japanese Wikipedia describes cosplayers building their own websites from the 2000s, and social media later spreading cosplay worldwide, with cosplayers posting their own photos and selfies. Shoots happen at events, at private sessions arranged by cosplayers or photographers, and at paid photo sessions run by event companies and model agencies.

Adult cosplayers now also sell sets as posts on fan sites. On MyFans, a creator can put sets inside a monthly plan or sell them as single posts, so you can buy just the set you want. Our guide to tips, single posts and messages explains how buying a single post works. MyFans is for adults only: its help centre says minors can’t use it.

Buying sets the respectful way

Doujin work is easy to copy. Japanese Wikipedia notes that popular doujin software can be copied and spread illegally online on the very day it’s released. The best way to support a cosplayer is to buy from them directly, and never re-share what you’ve paid for. MyFans added a form for reporting unauthorised reposts in June 2026.

If you go to an event in person, follow its rules. At Comiket, according to Japanese Wikipedia, cosplay photography is banned outside the designated areas.
