pixiv FANBOX Outside Japan: Payment, English and R-18

Updated and checked against the MyFans help centre on 10 October 2026

Short answer

Yes, you can support FANBOX creators from outside Japan. FANBOX accepts Visa, Mastercard, JCB and American Express cards and PayPal, with no FANBOX handling fee. One catch: PayPal can’t be used to support creators who post R-18 content unless you’d already used PayPal on FANBOX before 21 March 2024, 6 pm Japan time. FANBOX runs on your pixiv account, which has an English display setting, and R-18 posts are shown only to users 18 or over who switch them on.

pixivFANBOX (usually just “FANBOX”) is the fan-subscription service run by pixiv, the Japanese art community. Fans abroad mostly want to know three things: which cards and wallets work, whether the site works in English, and how R-18 creators are handled. Everything below comes from FANBOX’s and pixiv’s own help pages, checked on 10 October 2026.

How FANBOX works

FANBOX uses your pixiv account. Its help pages send you to the pixiv login page, and FANBOX says you can’t leave pixiv while you’re still supporting a creator. If you already have a pixiv account, you already have what you need.

To join, press “Become a FAN” on a creator’s page and choose a plan. You can be on only one plan per creator. A more expensive plan also shows every post for the cheaper plans below it, and once you’re supporting, you can see all earlier posts available on your plan.

FANBOX’s creator help describes plans priced from ¥100 to ¥10,000 a month. FANBOX also says you’re charged every month whether or not the creator posts anything, because a pledge supports the creator rather than buying specific content.

Creators see your FANBOX username when you start supporting them. FANBOX says your payment method isn’t passed on to the creator.

Payment methods from abroad

pixivFANBOX payment methods (help pages edited 29 June 2026, checked 10 October 2026)
MethodWhat FANBOX saysFrom outside Japan?
Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American ExpressAccepted; 3-D Secure is used when you register a cardYes, subject to your card issuer
PayPal (bank account or card)Accepted, but not for R-18 creators unless you used PayPal on FANBOX before 21 March 2024, 6 pm JSTYes, with that R-18 limit
VANDLE CARD (prepaid)The one prepaid card FANBOX confirms; other prepaid and debit cards may not workFANBOX doesn’t say
pixivcobanFor residents of Japan onlyNo
Convenience storeMarked “Japan only”; ¥120 fee per pledge; not available on the last day of the monthNo

FANBOX charges no handling fee of its own for cards, PayPal or pixivcoban. Prices are in yen; any conversion or foreign-transaction fee comes from your card issuer or PayPal, not FANBOX.

If a card won’t register, FANBOX says the cause may be 3-D Secure verification, that it can’t see why verification failed, and that you should contact your card company.

VAT: FANBOX adds VAT for supporters it determines live in a European Union member state, judged automatically from the country where your card was issued or your PayPal account’s country. On the page we checked, the EU is the only region listed, so US, UK, Canadian and Australian supporters aren’t on it.

The PayPal and R-18 rule

This trips up many overseas fans. FANBOX’s payment page says PayPal payments are no longer available to support creators posting R-18 content if you had never used PayPal for transactions on FANBOX before 21 March 2024 at 6 pm Japan time.

FANBOX’s troubleshooting page puts it more loosely: depending on your past PayPal history, PayPal may not be available for certain creators, especially those posting R-18 content. Either way, the fix FANBOX gives is the same: use another payment method, which for most fans abroad means a card.

A general FANBOX article describes PayPal as a way for supporters outside Japan to pay, without repeating the R-18 condition. Read it together with the payment-methods page rather than on its own.

English and region settings

FANBOX says the platform is available in multiple languages, and encourages Japanese creators to translate their profiles into English. The display language is a pixiv setting: on desktop, open the menu from your icon and choose the language; on mobile web, use Settings → Language and location. The pixiv app follows your phone’s language instead.

Expect creators’ own posts to be mostly Japanese. FANBOX itself suggests fans may use machine translation, and tells creators to prioritise translating their profile and post titles.

pixiv sets your country or region automatically from where you access it, and says some content may be restricted depending on the law where you’re browsing from. If the automatic setting is wrong, pixiv asks you to correct it under Language and location on the web version.

R-18 settings and age rules

FANBOX shows R-18 posts only if you turn them on: Account settings → Browsing settings → See R-18 content. pixiv says you must set your date of birth before you can change this, that age-restricted content is hidden for users under 18 and for new registrations, and that under-18s can’t change the setting. The setting can’t be changed in the pixiv app; use a browser.

FANBOX’s tag search shows posts only from creators whose page is set to all ages, so R-18 creators don’t turn up there. You may need the creator’s own FANBOX link, which many post on their pixiv or social profiles.

FANBOX notes that it and pixiv are Japanese services, so R-18 content must be censored under their guidelines, which follow Japanese law. For why that means mosaics, see Japanese censorship explained.

Billing, stopping and refunds

You pay on the day you start supporting, and that first period runs only to the end of the calendar month, even if you join on the 28th. After that, card, PayPal and pixivcoban pledges are charged automatically between the 1st and 5th of each month.

If the automatic payment at the start of a month fails, your support stops and FANBOX emails you. Pledge again in the same month to keep your supporter history unbroken.

To stop: Supported Creators → Change Plan → Update payment method → Stop being a FAN. You keep access to supporters-only posts until the end of that month. FANBOX doesn’t refund the rest of the month, and says a pledge that has been paid can’t be cancelled or returned, even if you started supporting by mistake.

How MyFans differs

FANBOX’s creators include illustrators, manga artists, VTubers, cosplayers and novelists, many of them active on pixiv. MyFans is a separate Japanese platform built around creators’ photo and video posts. The practical differences abroad: MyFans lists Visa, Mastercard and JCB cards (not American Express or PayPal), renews each plan on the date you joined rather than at the start of the month, and lets one creator run several separately billed plans.

Our MyFans vs Fantia vs Fanbox comparison sets the three side by side, and paying MyFans from abroad covers MyFans’ own methods.

Quick answers

Can I use PayPal on pixiv FANBOX?

Yes, except for supporting creators who post R-18 content: that’s blocked unless you used PayPal on FANBOX before 21 March 2024, 6 pm Japan time. Use a Visa, Mastercard, JCB or American Express card instead.

Is pixiv FANBOX available in English?

Yes. FANBOX says it’s available in multiple languages; set English in your pixiv display-language setting. Creators’ posts are often in Japanese.

How do I see R-18 posts on FANBOX?

Set your date of birth on pixiv, then turn on Account settings → Browsing settings → See R-18 content in a browser. Users under 18 can’t change it.

When does FANBOX charge me?

On the day you start supporting, for the rest of that calendar month, then automatically between the 1st and 5th of each month.

Does FANBOX add VAT?

Only for supporters it determines live in the EU, based on the card’s issuing country or the PayPal account’s country.
