JAV vs Japanese Creators on MyFans: What’s the Difference?

Updated and checked against the MyFans help centre on 11 October 2026

Short answer

JAV is what Japan calls AV (アダルトビデオ, adult video): adult video made by studios, known in Japan as メーカー (“makers”), and released title by title on disc, through rental shops and by online streaming. A MyFans creator runs their own page: you pay them through monthly plans or single posts, and MyFans passes the money on after its fees. Both are mosaicked because of Article 175 of Japan’s Penal Code.

If you’ve been searching “JAV”, you’ve met Japan’s studio adult video. Japanese creators on MyFans are something else: real people running their own fan pages, setting their own prices and talking to their own fans. They look similar at first glance (both are mosaicked, for one), but who makes them, how you pay and where your money goes are very different. Here’s the side-by-side.

What “AV” means in Japan

The Digital Daijisen dictionary defines アダルトビデオ as adult-oriented video software centred on explicit sexual depiction, and gives AV as its short form. Japanese Wikipedia adds that “adult video” is an English-looking phrase coined in Japan, and that in Japan it usually means home-grown productions, kept separate from foreign ones. So when you search “JAV”, you’re looking for what Japan simply calls AV (エーブイ).

According to the Kyodo News glossary on Kotobank, companies that had been making adult photo magazines began releasing AV in the 1980s, as video recorders spread into Japanese homes. As rental video shops multiplied, so did the makers and the number of titles. Today it comes on DVD and Blu-ray, and much of it is streamed online.

For studio work, the Kyodo News glossary, written in 2016, put an actress’s appearance fee at ¥150,000 to ¥3 million per title.

A creator page works like a subscription. On MyFans, plans renew every month, and a post can sit inside a plan or be sold on its own. Under Article 15 of MyFans’ terms, MyFans receives fans’ payments on the creator’s behalf, deducts its fees and pays the rest into the creator’s bank account when they ask, with a minimum request of ¥10,000. In plain terms: your subscription goes to the person you’re watching.

The two worlds do touch. If anyone other than the creator appears in a MyFans post, MyFans requires the creator to sign a contract that complies with Japan’s AV Act and to have that person’s consent before posting.

Why both are mosaicked

Article 175 of Japan’s Penal Code makes it a crime to distribute or publicly display “obscene” material, including over the internet, or to possess it for sale. The law never defines “obscene”, so Japanese producers and platforms cover genitals and sexual contact with a mosaic to stay on the right side of it.

Japanese Wikipedia describes AV, in the narrow sense, as titles that have passed self-review by industry bodies, and classes videos without that mosaic as illegal under Article 175. MyFans writes the same rule into Article 12 of its terms: creators must mosaic those areas, and its help centre says uncensored posts are an immediate violation.

Either way, the mosaic is part of the file, so it’s there wherever you watch from. Our guide to why Japanese adult content is mosaicked has the full story.

So which one is for you?

If you want polished, professionally shot productions, studio content is the classic route. If you want to follow one person, see their everyday posts and send them a message now and then, a creator page is where that happens.

One practical catch: the Japanese adult site FANZA says its service can’t be used from outside Japan. Our guide to FANZA and DMM outside Japan explains what that means. MyFans, by contrast, says users outside Japan can register.

Quick answers

What does JAV stand for?

Japanese adult video. In Japan it’s simply called AV (アダルトビデオ), adult video made by studios called メーカー.

Is MyFans the same as JAV?

No. JAV is studio-made and sold title by title. MyFans creators run their own pages, and you pay them through monthly plans or single posts.

Why is JAV censored?

Article 175 of Japan’s Penal Code bans distributing obscene material without defining it, so Japanese producers mosaic genitals and sexual contact. MyFans requires the same in its terms.

Is content on MyFans uncensored?

No. MyFans requires creators to mosaic explicit areas, and no plan or purchase removes it. See Is MyFans uncensored?.

Does my money go to the creator on MyFans?

Yes, after fees. MyFans’ terms say it collects fans’ payments for the creator, deducts its fees and pays the rest to the creator’s bank account on request.
